First Generation

1. George SKIVER. (Possible son of John SKIVER?...) George was born in PA in 1796.[31,340] George died in Hocking Co., OH in 1875; he was 79.[31] It is a possibility that he might be buried in the SKIVER Cemetery, South of Nelsonville on Co. Road 737 at Minkers Run Roads.

circa 1820 when George was 24, he married Elizabeth “Bettie” COOK[339] in OH? Elizabeth “Bettie” was born in PA on the 7th of September, 1803.[336]

They had the following children:

iii. Hester “Hethy.”[590] Hester “Hethy” was born in OH on 17 February 1827.[590] Hester “Hethy” died in Dover Tshp., Athens Co., OH on 17 April 1914; she was 87.[590] She was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH.[590]
4 iv. Levi “Lee” (1828-1910)
v. Anna “Annie.” Anna “Annie” was born in 1830.
On 25 August 1855 when Anna “Annie” was 25, she married Asa LADD[336,478] in Athens County, OH.31,[478] Asa was born in ? circa 1826.
vi. Thomas. Thomas was born in 1836. Thomas died in Hocking Co., OH.[31] Died in a mining accident.
On 14 June 1863 when Thomas was 27, he married Mary BROKINGS[31,336] in Hocking Co., OH.[31] Mary was born in ? circa 1842.[336]
5 vii. Sarah (1836-1914)
viii. Charles. Charles was born in 1842.
6 ix. James Polk (1845-1918)

1840 Census: George was listed in the census for Green Tshp., Hocking Co., Ohio. He was 44. He was listed in the 40-50 column.[404]
In the 1850 Census of Starr Tshp., Hocking Co., Ohio, Dwelling No: 436, and Family No: 436, Daniel Skiver was living next door/farm to George and Elizabeth Skiver. Family members of George (54 years) and Elizabeth (46 years old) were; Levi, Anna, Hester, Thomas, Sarah, Charles, and James. William (age 23) and Jane SKIVER’S (age 22) were listed at the next household.[31, 340]Looks like William was born in 1827 (Ohio) and Jane (WALTERS), born in 1828 (VA) and were married in this census. They were married on the 20th of March, 1849 in Hocking Co., Ohio.[31,340]

1850 Census, Elizabeth was listed as being 46 years old. Elizabeth “Bettie” died in York Tshp., Athens Co., OH on 11 April 1887; she was 83.[112] At the time of her death, she was listed as being 83 years, 7 months, and 4 days. Its a possibility that she might be buried in the SKIVER Cemetery, South of Nelsonville on Co. Road 737 at Minkers Run Roads. She was listed in the census for Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH in 1880; she was 76.[339]

In the 1870 Census, George was listed in York Tshp., Athens Co., OH, he was 74 years old and born in PA. Occupation: Laborer.[32, 392]
“Bettie” was listed in the 1880 Census in Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH, being 78 years old and widowed. She was living with her daughter “Hettie” and Granddaughter “Liza Ann BOGA.” Hettie was 45 years old, didn’t list if she was single/married/widowed, and born in Ohio, Liza Ann was 9 years old and born in Ohio. They were living on Tangletown Road in Nelsonville, Ohio.[339]

George was listed on the Death Certificate of Levi SKIVER, York Tshp., Athens Co., OH, File No: 35423, Reg. No. 81.

Second Generation

2. Daniel SKIVER.[340] Daniel was born in Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH in 1821.[113,611] From the 1860 Census, Daniel was listed as being 44 years old. was listed in the census for Starr Tshp., Hocking County, Ohio in 1850; he was 29.[340] He was listed in the census for York Tshp., Athens Co., OH in 1860; he was 39.[113] Occupation: Was A Laborer In The 1850 And The 1860 Census.

As per the 1850 Ohio Census, it lists Daniel, m, 29 years old (b:1821), laborer, born in OH, Catherine, f, age 25 (born: 1825), Angeline, f, age 4 (born: 1846), Sarah, age 3 (born: 1847), and Elias, m, age 5/12 (born: 1850).[340]

On 22 March 1845 when Daniel was 24, he married Catherine BIRD336 in Athens County, OH.31, Athens County Marriages, 1805 thru 1865.[478] Catherine was born in York Tshp., Athens Co., OH in 1825.[340,479] She was listed in the census for Starr Tshp., Hocking County, Ohio in 1850; she was 25.[340]

Catharine Skiver received into the Infirmary January 6th, 1864 by direction of Trustees of York Township. Aged 30 years (sic: should be 38 years old!). Her birthplace York Township, Athens County, State of Ohio. Length of residence not stated. Previous habits good. Present condition needy, bare-footed and almost naked. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Catherine Skiver gave birth to a male child May 10th, 1864 and named it Emily Skiver (even though it said male child...)[479]

On 19 October 1864 when Angeline was 18, she married Jacob COCHRAN[31] in Hocking Co., OH.31,530 Jacob was born circa 1840.
ii. Sarah. Sarah was born in 1847.
iii. Elias.[31,611] Elias was born in Hocking Co., OH on 15 May 1850.[401,611] 15 May 1845 Estimated birth year on Death Cert. Elias died in Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH on 28 August 1909; he was 59.[611] 64 years 3 months 13 days, as per Death Cert. was buried on 30 August 1909 in Buchtel, York Tshp., Athens Co., OH.[611]

Elias Skiver, son of Catharine Skiver received into Infirmary January 30th, 1864 being sent from York Township to join the rest of the family in the Infirmary. Age when admitted 14 years. Birthplace: Athens County, Ohio. Length of residence not stated. Previous habits not named. Present condition needy. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Elias Skiver was discharged from infirmary May 18th, 1864 by order of the Directors.[479]

In the 1880 Ohio Census, Nelsonville, Athens Co., Elias was listed as Divorced and 28 years old, being a laborer, born in OH. He was also living with Patrick Martin, age 44 from Ireland and a Laborer, Joseph Roberts, age 51, from OH, a Blacksmith, and Nathaniel Blake, age 19, a Coal Miner from Ohio.[401]

Hezekiah died in Chauncey, Dover Tshp., Athens Co., OH on 27 November 1929; he was 77. 79 years 6 months as per Death Cert. was buried on 30 November 1929 in Green Lawn.[611]

Hezekiah married Emma J. ?,[31] daughter of Willis PERSON. Emma J. was born in OH on 15 April 1849.31,611 Emma J. died in Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH on 29 May 1914; she was 65.[611] 65 years 1 month 14 days as per Death Cert. was buried on 31 May 1914 in Green Lawn.[611]

On 20 March 1849 when William was 22, he married Jane WALTERS[31,336,529] in Hocking Co., OH.[31,529] Jane was born in Culpepper County, VA on 26 May 1827.[336,338,340,679] Jane died in Salt Creek Tshp., Hocking Co., OH. on 14 February 1883; she was 55.[31,337] Aged 55 years, 8 months, and 19 days. was buried in Mount Carmel Church Cemetery, Saltcreek Tshp., Hocking Co., OH.[337] Cemetery is on Pole Ridge Road. Inscription says: “Gone from our home but not from our hearts.” She was listed in the census for Starr Tshp., Hocking County, Ohio in 1850; she was 22.[340]

Jane was listed as being 22 years old and living with William, under William’s mother and father, George and Elizabeth Skiver.

In the 1850 Census, Jane was listed as being 22 years old in the same household with William Skiver (her husband), age 23. This was the household of William’s mother and father, Elizabeth and George Skiver.[31]

On the 1880 census, Jane was listed as being 53 years old, Keeping House and was born in VA, and both parents born in VA.[402]

Mary E. was listed in the 1928 Chillicothe City Directory and was widowed by Asa. She was living as a border at the East Side of Logan Street, 3 South of Main (this is what the directory says - three houses South of Main?).[432]
iii. Sarah “Ellen.” Sarah “Ellen” was born in 1856.

4. Levi “Lee” SKIVER. Levi “Lee” was born in Hocking Co., OH on 10 January 1828.[31,336,589] Levi’s Birth Place is listed on Franklin “Frank” Skiver’s death certificate as being Monroe Co., Ohio. Levi “Lee” died in Hocking Co., OH on 7 July 1910; he was 82.[31] was listed in the census for Starr Tshp., Hocking County, Ohio in 1850; he was 21.[336,340] was listed in the census for York Tshp., Athens County, OH in 1860; he was 31.[4,336] was listed in the census for York Tshp., Athens County, OH in 1870; he was 41.[336,807] was listed in the census for York Tshp., Athens County, OH in 1880; he was 51.[336] was listed in the census for Madison Precinct, Athens County, Ohio in 1900; he was 71.[665] Occupation: Farmer and Coal Miner.[4]

1850 Census York Tshp., Athens Co. Ohio, Levi is listed as being 21 years old (born in 1829), living with his father George, age 54, and his mother Elizabeth, age 46. He was living with his other brother’s and sister’s as follows; Anna, age 20, Hester, age 17, Thomas, age 14, Sarah, age 10, Charles, age 8, and James, age 5.[340] (source 340A and 340B)

1860 Census York Tshp., Athens Co. Ohio, Dwelling No: 263, Family No: 634: Levi (looks like there’s no last name after Levi, but one line above [Line No: 15], it looks like a Skiver, can’t read first name). Levi’s age 35 (born in 1825 on this census), farmer, personal estate 75 dollars; Arvilla, female, 26 years old, MELINDA, female 8 years old; DELILA, female 6 years old, EMANUEL, male 5 years old, CAROLINE, female 3 years old and LEWIS, male 9/12 years old. All were born in Ohio.[4]

187O Census York Tshp., Athens County Ohio: LEVI was 48 years old born in Ohio, Coal Miner, personal estate 100 dollars. Arvilla, wife 38 years old, Malinda, female 18 years old, Delila, female age 16, Emanuel, male age 14 coal miner, Caraline, female 13 years old, Lewis, male 9 year old, Elizabeth, female 8 years old, Francis, male 6 years old, Matilida, female 4 years old, and Charles, male, 1 year old.[394]

In the 1880 Census, Levi was listed as “Lee.” He was widowed, as Arvilla died 8 years earlier. He was 52 years old and a Farmer, born in OH. His household lists:[403]

On 22 January 1851 when Levi “Lee” was 23, he first married Arvilla LADD,[807] daughter of Luther LADD (1805-) & Harriet? (1811-) in Hocking Co., OH.[31,336] Arvilla was born in Hocking Co., OH on 10 March 1833.[31] Arvilla died in Hocking Co., OH on 1 October 1872; she was 39.[31] was buried in Boyles Cemetery, Nelsonville, Athens Co., Ohio.[31] was listed in the census for York Tshp., Athens Co., OH in 1870; she was 36.[394]

Mary Elizabeth died? in OH. was listed in the census for Madison Precinct, Athens County, Ohio in 1900; she was 48.[665] Occupation: On The 1880 Census In York Tshp., Athens Co., OH, Mary Was Listed As Being A Servant For The Lee (Levi) SKIVERS Family Of 7.[327], Mary was listed as being 27 years old on this census.
Mary E. was widowed and had one child (Edward Gethers) before she married Levi “Lee” in 1886.[451]

In the 1900 Ohio Census, Mary and Levi have been married for 13 years, having 6 children, 5 living. She and her Mother were born in Ohio, while her Father was born in PA.[665]

Sarah SKIVER.[478] Sarah was born in Ohio on 5 July 1836.[800] Sarah died in Nelsonville, York Tshp., Athens Co., OH on 31 January 1914; she was 77.[800] She was buried on 3 February 1914 in Green Lawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, York Tshp., Athens Co., Ohio.800 was listed in the census for Murray City, Ward Tshp., Hocking Co., Ohio in 1900; she was 63.[801]

In the 1900 Ohio Census, Sarah (SKIVER) Six was listed in the household of James Campbell (Head of Household) in Murray City, Hocking Co. and was 65 years of age, born in July, 1834 (Ohio), Widowed, Mother in Law of 5 children, all living.[801]

On 22 December 1857 when Sarah was 21, she first married Mathew R. CAMPBELL,[336,478,802] son of Robert CAMPBELL & Mary McGHIRE, in Athens County, OH.[31,478] Mathew R. was born in Ohio on 17 January 1836.[802] Mathew R. died in Mahoning, Goshen Tshp., Portage Co., Ohio on 18 September 1910; he was 74.[802] was buried on 20 September 1910 in Hope (nothing else listed)..[802] was listed in the census for Mahoning, Goshen Tshp., Portage Co., Ohio in 1860; he was 23.[803]

On Matthew's son’s “James” Death Certificate, it lists that Mathew and Sarah Skiver are the parents.[804]

They had one child:

James.[804] James was born in Ohio on 26 February 1857.[804] James died in Dover Tshp., Athens Co., Ohio on 8 December 1932; he was 75.[804] He was buried on 10 December 1932 in Green Lawn Cemetery (might be Nelsonville, OH?).[804] Occupation: Listed as a Coal Miner on his Death Certificate.[804]
On James Death Certificate, it lists that Mathew and Sarah Skiver are the parents.[804]

6. James Polk SKIVER.[31,478] James Polk was born in Hocking Co., OH on 25 March 1845.[31] James Polk died in Athens County, OH on 12 November 1918; he was 73.[31] He was listed in the census for Nelsonville, Athens Co., OH in 1880; he was 34. FHL Film No: 1254993, NA Film No: T9-0093, Page No: 300a.

On 6 April 1871 when James Polk was 26, he married Florence A. FISK[336,478] in Athens County, OH.[31,478] Florence A. was born in ? on 27 February 1854.[336] Florence A. died in ? circa 1947; she was 92.[336]

Mrs. SKIVER had been in her usual state of health and had just reached her home after attending the evening church services, when she was stricken and died before medical aid could be summoned. Father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sheldon, husband and eight children, Earl, Frank, Leo, Gretchen, Darrell, Fred, Anna and Arvilla, seven sisters and three brothers are left to mourn their loss. Came to the U.S. in 1893. On the 14th of July, 1941, Peter, age 74 from Redtown (OH), was killed instantly Sunday evening when struck by No. 6 New York Central Passenger train, South at Redtown.[31]

In the 1920 Census, Peter and Elizabeth had Bessie Hoskins, age 25, b: OH, servant, and her daughter Hilda Hoskins, age 3, b: OH, there at the time.[31]

In the 1900 Census of the Madison Precinct in Athens County, Ohio, it shows Frank, born in Ohio in August of 1863, which differs from his Death Certificate. On Line No 52; he was listed as being 36 years old, a Coal Miner, and married for 12 years with his wife “Prudie,” and having 7 children, 6 living. Line No 53 is Prudie, age 25, born in Ohio in May of 1875. Others listed are:

In the 1920 Census, it lists Frank as being 54, which means that he was born in 1866. He was listed as a Coal Miner and living on can’t read # 29 road or street.[399]

In 1888 when Francis “Frank” Franklin was 23, he married Prudance “Prudie” WARHAM[31,644] in Athens County, OH.[644] Married for 12 years in the 1900 Census. Prudance “Prudie” was born in OH in May 1875.[399,644] was listed in the census for Madison Precinct, Athens County, Ohio in 1900; she was 24.[644]

Prudence was listed as the “Wife Of” on the Death Certificate of Franklin “Frank” Skiver in July, 1940.[589]

On Charley’s Death Certificate, it says that Elizabeth Skiver was the Informant. Charley and Roxie were living at 233 West Canal Street in Nelsonville, Ohio. He died from a Small Bowel Obstruction, which he had for one week.[613]

So, the Death Certificate says 1875, which must me wrong! On 15 December 1906 when Alice was 19, she first married Phillip POWELL,[31] son of Phillip POWELL & Elizabeth MAFFIN, in Athens County, OH.[31] Athens Co. Marriage Index Volume No: 15, Page 27. Phillip was born in OH in 1883.[328] Phillip died in Millfield, Athens County, Ohio on 5 November 1930; he was 47.[328]

Phillip was one of the miners who was killed in the Sunday Creek Coal Company Mine #6 Explosion, 5 November, 1930, in Millfield, Athens County, Ohio at 12:30 p.m. in one of the worst coal mine disasters in Ohio:

Phil Powell age 47 born in Ohio; was the fire boss. He was the son of Phillip and Elizabeth Maffin Powell. He was married to Alice Skiver and they had eight children. Mrs. Floyd Wemmer, Mrs. John Cline of Millfield, Frances, Donald, Phillip J., James, Willow, and Richard Lee at home. His father, mother and two brothers preceded him in death. Left to mourn besides wife and children are one brother George Powell of Cleveland, two sisters, Miss Emma Powell of Columbus and Mrs. Henry Wanlers of St. Charles Michigan and many relatives and friends. He was a member of the Christian church of Nelsonville. His funeral was held at the Millfield Church of Christ and burial was made in Greenlawn. Burial services were conducted at the grave by the Red Men, and Degree of Pocahontas Lodges of which orders Mr. Powell was a member. "Evidence of a Struggle.  Mute evidence against a heart breaking struggle against death was discovered in the case of Phil Powell, whose body was found against a brattice.  With a hatchet, Powell had cut a hole through the brattice not far from the new air shaft.  He was found with one leg through  the hole.  Had he been able to crawl through the hole in the brattice he probably would have escaped the poisonous black damp gas which claimed the lives of most of the victims, experienced miners said."

Was a WW I veteran, served in France in 1918/19. Service No: 2431812. He enlisted in Athens, OH on 25 April, 1918 with the 158th Depot Brig. and was assigned to Company C, 324th MG (machine-gun) Battalion. From 29 July, 1918, he was with Co B, 322 MG Bat. in France to 31 Jan., 1919. Discharged on 14 Feb., 1919 and went home.[78]

“Faye” was in the 1910 Census, living with her parents - Thomas and Mary Wallace. They were living on Myers Street, which is in the 3rd Ward in Nelsonville (Ohio). The census lists them on Line No: 95 as; Thomas at age 33, married for 13 years, OH, OH, OH, Mary, age 33, OH, OH, OH, mother of 3 children, 2 living, Stella, f, age 11, born in OH, Fay G., f, age 6, born in OH.[335]

Faye’s mom separated and remarried sometime before 1920. In the 1920 Census, Arthur and Mary (WALLACE/FRASIER) Barber were married and living in Athens (Athens Co.), Ohio. Gladys F. (Faye) Wallace was living with them as a “Step Daughter.” Gladys was 16 years old and unmarried at the time.[761]

On their Marriage License, Faye was living in Buchtel (York Tshp., Ohio), and Frank was from Nelsonville (York Tshp., Ohio).[302] (this source number is the actual marriage/matrimony document)

Nelsonville (Ohio) - Relatives here have been notified of the death of Fred Skivers, 41, Sunday in Wyandotte, Mich.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Skivers, Nelsonville. Death resulted from complications following pneumonia.
A former resident of this city, he is survived by his wife and four children; three brothers, Earl, and Darrell of Wyandotte, and Frank of this city, who went there several days ago because of his brother’s illness; two sisters, Mrs. Gretchen Fattinge (sic), Wyandotte, and Mrs. Walter West, Columbus.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Nixon funeral home in Wyandotte. Burial will be in the cemetery there.[678]

Born Dec. 28, 1940, Athens County, daughter of the late Frank and Faye Wallace Skivers, she was married to Albert S. Fugitt Sr., who survives. She was retired from Goodyear. Also surviving are a son, Kem Skivers of Groveland, Fla.; a stepson, Albert S. Fugitt Jr. of Michigan; two daughters, Rita Woodgeard of Lancaster and Debbie Gottke of Logan; a stepdaughter, Carol Pruitt of South Venice, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald Skiver of Lancaster.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and a grandson. (TWO SISTER’S? Yes, the other sister was Mary Lou, born 13 Jan., 1935 and died on the 16th of January, 1935. Just finding out 12/2008.) [588]

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan, with Mark Barbee officiating.
